Occurrence of Spontaneous Cortical Spreading Depression Is Increased by Blood Constituents and Impairs Neurological Recovery after Subdural Hematoma …

2019

Acute subdural hemorrhage (ASDH) is common and associated with severe morbidity and mortality. To date, the role of spontaneous cortical spreading depression (sCSD) in exaggerating secondary injury after ASDH, is poorly understood. The present study contains two experimental groups: First, we investigated and characterized the occurrence of sCSD after subdural blood infusion (300 μL) via tissue impedance (IMP) measurement in a rat model. Second, we compared the occurrence and influence of sCSD on lesion growth and neurological deficit in the presence and absence of whole blood constituents. In the first experimental group, three IMP traits could be distinguished after ASDH: no sCSD, recurre…

Inflammatory and tumor-like lesions of the pancreas

2020

Summary Inflammatory/tumor-like lesions of the pancreas represent a heterogeneous group of diseases that can variably involve the pancreatic gland determining different signs and symptoms. In the category of inflammatory/tumor-like lesions of the pancreas, the most important entities are represented by chronic pancreatitis, which includes alcoholic, obstructive and hereditary pancreatitis, paraduodenal (groove) pancreatitis, autoimmune pancreatitis, lymphoepithelial cyst, pancreatic hamartoma and intrapancreatic accessory spleen. An in-depth knowledge of such diseases is essential, since they can cause severe morbidity and may represent a potential life-threatening risk for patients. Furthe…

Extended Pancreas Donor Program—The EXPAND Study

2018

BackgroundPancreas transplantation is the only curative treatment option for patients with juvenile diabetes. Organ shortage and restrictive allocation criteria are the main reasons for increasing waitlists, leading to severe morbidity and mortality. We designed a study to increase the donor pool wi

CRT-723 Is the Sporadic Thoracic Aortic Aneurysm the Result of an Inflammatory Process?

2014

Sporadic thoracic aortic aneurysm (S-TAA) is potentially devastating with severe morbidity and mortality. The histopathologic underlying abnormality of both ascending aortic aneurysm and dissection is medial degeneration, a pathological entity initially described as no inflammatory lesions of smooth
